House Update Vol. 7 – Outdoor
The seventh and final post in my House Update series…Today I’m sharing the exterior and entrance of this home as well as the outdoor living area, which, in my opinion is one of, if not THE BEST space this house has to offer!
Sitting on a nice quiet side street overlooking one of the biggest greenbelts in our estate, I give you this little beauty…
House Update Vol. 7 – Outdoor…
Let’s start with the garden and exterior from the road.
If you haven’t seen where we started – with a plot COVERED in trees, extremely sloped, long and fairly narrow – take a look at House Update Vol. 1.
My husband (who built this home with his team) had a vision for the design of this house – it was a very tricky plot to build on, not to mention creating a layout that would be visually pleasing and practical, as well as affordable to build.
He did an amazing job!
It’s not a massive garden by any means, but if you had pets or small children you could do away with the golf cart parking and grass that area, as well as add a perimeter fence and you’d have quite a spacious grassy patch.
Within this estate it’s always understood that the whole estate is your playground.
It’s safe to walk, run and bike at any time of the day on the roads or trails that weave through the forests, grasslands and alongside dams scattered with birdlife, buck, mongooses and cheeky monkeys.
Plus there are several common areas with a large swimming pool, playgrounds for kids, braai (BBQ) areas and even a soccer field.
Which means the size of your garden doesn’t matter quite as much.
We decided to keep the roof and exterior walls a pale shade of grey. We love how it contrasts against the dark grey window frames and the light colour creates a seamless transition from inside to outside as most of the interior is painted fresh white.
The wooden deck is so lovely! It really feels like you’re living in the trees…
And then you look to your right and you can see out over the valley and far into the distance over the greenbelt which will never be built on.
Perfect for entertaining, the sliding doors fold away completely to create a seamless flow from indoors to outdoors.
The built-in braai (barbecue) lends such a homey vibe and is SO ideal if you love to cook, eat and do your entertaining outdoors, as we do!
Half of the deck is covered and half is open to the sun rays for lazing in the pool and catching some Vitamin D in summer, and it’s quite sheltered from the crisp wind in winter.
It’s bitter-sweet to see this home completed – sweet because we love it so much and it’s been special to get to live here for a while, and bitter because we won’t be living here for the 2+ years that we had originally planned.
BUT, that’s okay. Life is taking us on a new adventure, and we’re ready for it!
What is that adventure you may ask? WELL, we may just have a little plan up our sleeves!
We’re 90% sure we’ll be hitting the road by the end of next week. A road trip from Durban to Cape Town has been on our bucket list for a while, and the time feels right.
We aren’t certain of our itinerary, it’s going to be a “take it 3 days at a time” kind of trip. It’s going to be such a treat!
I’ll be sure to document the nicest places to stay and best things to see and do along the way to share with you in some upcoming travel posts.
Until then, thanks for reading House Update Vol. 7 – Outdoor! Stay safe, and nourish your body with something good today!
