The Wine Tram hop-on hop-off tour is by far the best way to see the amazing beauty of the Franschhoek Valley, and simultaneously sample a few wines!  Picturesque vineyards, breath-taking scenery, warm hospitality, world-class cuisine, fine wines and a 300 year history.

Taking The Wine Tram Tour In Cape Town, South Africa is one of the best and most memorable day trip experiences!

There are 8 tram lines to choose from, they leave at different times throughout the day from the ticket office located in Franchhoek Village.  Each tram line stops at 7 wine farms, but they vary as to which wine farms they visit.

It’s best to get to the ticket office at least 30 minutes before departure time, and be ready and waiting to go at least 10 minutes before your tram leaves.

When Taking The Wine Tram Tour In Cape Town, each stop is 1 hour, which is just enough time to enjoy your wine tasting experience and peruse the venue.  If you want to stop for something to eat, you can stay for two hours and get the next tram.  Just bear in mind that if you do this, you will have to skip one of the wine farms as there won’t be time to visit them all.

Happy chaps we were with our choice of tram line, we didn’t really know any of the wine farms and so weren’t sure which would be the best route, but we were content to just go with the flow.

A lovely little coffee shop is positioned right by the ticket office where you can sit down and enjoy refreshments.  We had a delicious scrambled egg and avo breakfast here before we left!

There is a Clicks right across the road from the ticket office just in case you need to stock up on sunscreen – which I highly advise!

We had a heatwave in Cape Town the day we took the wine tram tour, and not a breath of wind.  It was H O T.

But don’t worry, Cape Town spring and summer weather rarely gets as hot as it was this day, and I would even advise you to take a jacket or jersey along if it’s a windy day, as the wind can be icy even in the warmer months.

Our favourite wines by far were the Rickety Bridge Foundation Stone which is a multi-award winning white wine blend, the Rickety Bridge Chenin Blanc, the Grande Provence Angels Tears Rosé – Natural Sweet (Oh my gosh – this rosé was YUM) and the award winning Grande Provence Chenin Blanc.

I think the warm weather contributed strongly to us preferring all the white wines and rosé…I’m pretty sure on a cooler day we would have loved the reds too!

Grande Provence was my favourite wine farm for its truly picturesque garden setting looking out over the vineyards with mountains in the background.  Also…the SHADE was glorious.

There is a cute sculpture garden here that we strolled around after our wine tasting.

By stop #3 – Holden Manz, we were ready for lunch and we were feeling fancy so we ate upstairs at the Holden Manz restaurant.  But there is also a food truck here where you can get wraps and sandwiches.

You can buy wines from all the farms during the wine tasting and either leave them with your tram conductor and collect them at the end of the tour from the ticket office, or have them delivered to your home if you live anywhere in South Africa.  Most of the wine farms also offer overseas delivery.
